When a tragedy strikes we all want to help.

These days we have the ability to see, hear and in some cases experience the pain others around the world are feeling in real time. Cell phones, 24 hour news channels, plus online websites give us instantaneous images of disasters. Each tragedy could be caused by Mother Nature, or by us humans. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a gulf spill, a school shooting or a tornado ripping a mile wide path through a town. So it got me thinking. Are we having more disasters or do we just have faster information about them?

Scientists say the number and strength of hurricanes and tornados is on the increase. Some experts say it’s because of global warming.  We’re always searching for answers, but sometimes bad things just happen. We are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Don’t know if I’d like to live in tornado alley, but many people do. It’s their home, and in some cases it has been for generations. No matter where we choose to live there are hazards. It could be a hurricane, a flood, an ice storm, an earthquake, or even a volcano. All we can do is be prepared, and take as many precautions as we can. But the one thing you can count on in America is that those around you will help. This happens in many other countries but not all of them. We shouldn’t need a disaster to know what a great country we live in.
