I’ve voted in over a dozen presidential elections. Yes, I’m old. I’ve voted for both Republicans and Democrats and once for myself. I’ve voted for the winning candidate and the losing candidate. I’ve listened to the rhetoric of the candidates running and about how the other person is worthless. I voted for Carter instead of Reagan because the networks announced the winner before I had a chance to vote. Now I vote weeks in advance so this doesn’t happen.
I remember the feeling of relief when my candidate won and sadness when he lost. What I don’t remember is the feeling of fear that I have now. It’s not the fear of losing my health care, or equal rights given (or earned) for so many, but the fear of something catastrophic happening. It’s the fear that President Trump will react in a manner detrimental to the millions of armed service men and women. The fear he will make a decision that will put many of them in a war that shouldn’t have happened. Am I paranoid? Maybe.
So far our new president hasn’t demonstrated the skills I think are necessary to be president. I would like to see him count to ten before reacts to remarks, speeches, and articles. His tweets are not productive.
He is now the leader of this great nation and also seen as the leader of the free world. These are tremendous responsibilities. The expectations so far have been to undo things rather than do things. I’d like to see this change. President Trump has an opportunity to do many great things. I’d like to see many of them come to fruition without hurting the many who voted against him. I’d like to be alive when we vote in our next presidential election. I’d like to feel confident that millions of people won’t die because of a not well thought out response to an event somewhere in the world. If President Trump can calm this nation, I think we’ll all be okay. It starts with him and it starts today…..
