Our political system is like the new toll lanes on I-405 near where I live. It costs money to drive in them and you can only get out of them at specific locations. These lanes have double lines you can’t cross and a jersey barrier between the north and south bound lanes. If I’m driving south I can only exit to “left” if I use the car pool exits. If I want to exit to the “right” I need to wait until there’s a single dotted line that I’m allowed to cross, much like issues facing America today. Gun rights: wait until that exit. Allow abortions: car pool exit coming up.
Sometimes the traffic is so heavy that no one is moving. Then the political signs come out and everyone yells at those in the other lanes. Conservatives point across the barriers at liberals, and vice versa. No one talks to each other in calm voices, but yells and shouts. On a scale of one to ten on anger everyone is above an eight.
I feel caught in the middle. The conservatives have gone too far to the right and the liberals are way too far to the left. Sanders and Cruz are two examples. What happened to talking and not yelling? What happened to solving and not blaming? Every time an issue comes up one side is ready to jump and blame the other, even a simple speech by the spouse of someone running for president. Yeah we caught you. You cheated and plagiarized. Neither actually wrote their speeches. Everyone should just chill. This was the week for the Republicans and the Democrats will have their week next week. Then “only” four more months of yelling and pointing at each other. Don’t you think “we” could spend our time more productively by solving a few problems? I do. This is America. We have the right to speak out, but we also have a responsibility to come together and solve problems. We have in the past and hopefully we will again in the future.
