There have been many great people in the history of the world, and Nelson Mandela was one of them. He not only impacted the government in South Africa but probably all the governments in Africa. His peaceful transition to power lead to many improvements within South Africa. Is South Africa now perfect? No, but it is better today because of him.
I’ve lived in a free country my whole life. I’ve traveled to countries where saying the wrong words can land you in jail. I’m not sure how I’d handle living in a repressive country. Would I have the guts to stand up, or would I hunker down and exist; keeping my thoughts to myself? Nelson Mandela stood up for everyone, suffered decades in jail and then became president of his country. He didn’t abuse his new power but used it to heal the wounds of apartheid. It doesn’t matter what color you are or what country you live in, Nelson Mandela changed the world for all of us. May we all remember what he endured in the name of peace.
