While writing a novel the author layers things onto the protagonist. If it’s a bride going to her wedding she has a flat tire, in the rain, a bad jack and no spare. When we layer in real life we call it stress. We have too many things to do and not enough time. Everything is manageable until one too many items are piled on.
We all have those days. The day starts off bad and gets worse. Items that would normally take a few minutes, take hours. You’re almost finished when something breaks and you have to start all over again. For others it is a way of life. Nothing happens until there’s a crisis so therefore they’re always in crisis mode. What type of person are you? Do you make lists and cross off each task as you accomplish it? Or do you just charge ahead and tackle the first one you come to? Or do you wait for someone, anyone to come along to help you? Being a writer, no one comes to help. You are on your own.
Some people have their jobs laid out for them while others have no idea what tomorrow will bring. A doctor, when doing scheduled surgeries, knows exactly what he or she is going to do. The Medic One EMT responds to an event never knowing what he will find there. An airline pilot knows precisely what to expect until something is layered on. This could be an engine failure, birds, or bad weather. What’s your job like and how do you adjust every day? Today my task is just trying to grind through my list one task at a time.
