People often ask me where I get my ideas for my novels. The answer I usually give is “I just make stuff up.” But in reality ideas come from all over. Sometimes it’s from a dream, sometimes an idea will come to me while riding my bicycle. Many people listen to music via their iPods or cell phones while riding. I like to listen to world around me as I ride. On busy roads I listen to the cars traveling past me and hope they’ll give me room to ride. On trails I’m more relaxed, let my mind wander and tend to look around more.
I live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world…when the sun is shining. Everyone is happy and has a smile. I hear the sounds of the world, from all the birds to the rushing waters of creeks and rivers as I ride. The roar of water reminds me of floating different rivers around the northwest, which makes me think about scouting rapids on the Salmon River. And that is how my protagonist happened to travel down the River of No Return. Maybe I should try something new like skydiving or a hot air balloon ride. Just might be another way for my characters to escape.
