All dads are different. Mine was really different. I have a 500 lb. piece of petrified wood in my entry to prove it. He lived through the “great” depression so it helped shape him. He saved everything, including frozen aluminum pie pans, old motors, and every nut and bolt he took off anything. I thought he was the dumbest person in the world. Well he was until he showed me how to fix things.
He showed me how to repair anything. His generation didn’t buy stuff to replace something that didn’t work anymore, they repaired it. If he couldn’t fix it or make something to replace it maybe he’d go to the store and buy a replacement. Today when something doesn’t work “we” just toss it and get a different one. Take cell phones. We drop them, crack the screens, get them wet, or even run over them with our cars. We just hope we’ve had them long enough so they won’t cost too much to replace.
Speaking of cars how many of us even work on a car anymore? I don’t change the oil, I go to Jiffy Lube. I don’t rotate the tires, I go to Les Schwab. Repairing things is now a lost art. I remember replacing our washing machine and putting the old one outside for some charity to pick up. My dad took it saying “There’s some good stuff here I might need.” I think our generation really isn’t much greener than his.
