Went to a retirement party last Friday for someone I’ve known for a very long time. I’ve known her as a friend, neighbor, travel buddy, and volunteer. I knew a little about her profession, but it was nice to hear the kind words of those who’ve worked with her for years. She was a surgical nurse, first assistant. She’s the one who sewed you up after your surgery. She was recognized as “surgical nurse of the year in the USA”, the first certified first assistant in the State of Washington, and president of the first assistant’s association U.S…
She is the type of person you’d want as a friend, a sister, a mother, or a grandmother. She always gets more done in a day than anyone I know. She trained too many young nurses to count, leaving a legacy that will be hard to match. Most people saw her with her mask, hat, and dressed in scrubs. I saw her with smile and a glass of wine. So as each of us progresses through our careers, what legacy will we leave? The bar was just set very high and will move higher in the months to come. Just because she is retired, doesn’t mean she won’t continue to contribute. She’s already making quilts for her return trip to Guatemala to do more volunteer surgeries.
