I use to have only one computer on my desk. Today there are a few more. I still have my PC which has pictures and most of my personal data, but I also have my traveling laptop. This one has all my presentations, copies of books, favorite links to my web page, Facebook account, tweeter account, plus a bunch more stuff. Also there are my Nook, smart phone, Garmin, and two calculators. Two calculators because the “9” key doesn’t work on one of them. Yes I know I should just toss it but I like it.
Now that fall is here and the weather has turned cool, rainy, and sometime windy I wonder what I’ll do when the power goes off. Having worked for the power company I know it will happen, just not for how long. As a struggling author, I’ll be able to use my laptop for a few hours and then the battery will die. Nook is good for a few hours of reading and the cell phone good for a day. I won’t be able to get on the internet on either my PC or laptop since my wireless router will be down. I can check my Facebook and tweeter accounts on my cell phone but that will shorten the battery life. I’ll have no water, no heating system so it will be cool inside the house. So it looks like my only connection to the outside world will be my cell phone, assuming the cell towers have enough battery backup or have power. Being in the dark, cold, and maybe hungry will remind me how easy I have it most of the time. Now is the time to get prepared for at least three days without power, maybe a week’s worth of food and water.
