China, just like the United States, faces many issues. There are the economic issues, political issues, and border issues with countries surrounding them, including India and Tibet. Well the border issues with Tibet are really control issues. Why does China have control over Tibet? Well they fear the west would use Tibet against them by installing military bases there too close to China. They also fear the rivers that flow out of Tibet into China could either be diverted causing major drought problems or dams being breached causing major flooding.
It all boils down to: who do you trust? Which countries around the world does China trust? I don’t think there are very many. China certainly doesn’t trust Russia, India, United States, Japan, or most of the Middle East. In Europe, I don’t know whom they have “good” relationship with. I think there will be a transformation in China…soon. All the unrest around the world and the fact you can’t have absolute control over information will change things in China. It might take a generation or two, but it could happen in the next couple of years. Knowledge is power and in today’s information age you can’t control all the people who will find a way to get the facts.
