Nixon opened the “Bamboo Curtain” in 1972. Just a little over forty years ago China was an enigma. Today a billion plus people in China make everything from fireworks to iPhones. Here in America it is hard to find something not made in China in most stores. Even the ceramic mugs you buy as souvenirs in Yellowstone Park are made in China.
China holds a huge amount of our national debt. The amount owed by the USA to China increases every day. China is trying to modernize their whole country with major high speed rail systems, generation plants, hydroelectric dams, and some of the tallest buildings in the world. Like many industrial nations the fast growth and pollution has caught up with them. Some of their cities are close to unlivable. How China solves these problems in the next few years may set the tone for generations to come.
