Racing to finding our wild side and our limits

There’s a wild side to all of us when we are reckless and do some challenging and demanding things. Mine was racing cars. Just how fast could I go into this corner and still make the turn? Oops, too fast, but hopefully I wouldn’t hit anything or get hurt. I drove rally cars for years in the Northwest, Western Canada, and even California. I thought I was fast, until I saw the results of all the others.

I drove my Datsun 510 as hard as I could, sometimes with both feet on the gas pedal. I crashed a few times, once rolling three times down into a river. The water put out the fire that started on the second roll. I remember driving on a the dark and rainy night, on a gravel logging road, in fifth gear, and noticing how fast the old tree stumps were going by and how much it would hurt to hit one. I slowed down and knew my racing career was over. We all have our limits and I found one of mine that night.
