Clean water for the children of Ethiopia

Clean water for the children of Ethiopia

We take clean, available drinking water for granted. Sometimes we even feel the need to have bottled water so we won’t get any “stuff” while we drink. We have refrigerators with filtered water and readymade ice at the touch of lever. And I’ve even complained when I’ve been at a luncheon that the water tastes too much like chlorine. But there are many places in the world where children walk miles to get water for their families and that water is contaminated. Try carrying five gallons of water for a mile. Then do it all day long.

It is estimated that over one billion people around the world don’t have access to clean water. Over the next couple of years we hope to reduce that number. With the collaboration of Rotary Clubs, Rotary International and WorldVision, we will bring clean, healthy water to tens of thousands of people in Africa. Hundreds of young children will be able to focus on learning rather than carrying water to their homes and schools. In one area I visited in Ethiopia, the number of water born diseases dropped over 60% with the installation of a water system. I may not be able to solve all the problems in the world, but a little girl in Africa is healthier today because somebody cared.
